How to Use Frankincense for Skin Care

Did you know that Frankincense essential oil can be added to your moisturizer for a more clear and radiant complexion? It can and I use it this way every day.

Frankincense is great for skin care for both young and mature skin. The astringent properties of frankincense essential oil can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well as help improve skin tone and tighten the skin.

Benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense can help with a greater spiritual connection, it is an ancient holiday tradition around the holidays.

Frankincense has a nice woodsy, kind of sweet and spicy aroma which brings about peace of mind, and a sense of calmness and relaxation. It has a lasting scent.

Frankincense can be used aromatically in the diffuser, it can be used topically for massage oil (I'll post some recipes soon for the diffuser and massage oil) and to make your own facial cream.

Frankincense and Coconut Oil Face Cream Recipe

Below is a homemade facial moisturizer that I made for myself to use morning and night. I absolutely love this recipe - I'm hooked. This moisturizes well but does not leave my skin oily, and this small batch will last a very long time. Imagine the money you will save using this versus a more expensive moisturizer - and this is natural!

I use Organic Fiji brand coconut oil but there are many different brands and you may have your favorite. It is raw, cold pressed, extra virgin. I get mine at Super Supplements; this is the only coconut oil I buy. I called the company to ask what the average shelf life was for their product and a gentleman answered the phone right away, that doesn't happen much anymore, and was very helpful. I like knowing I use a product where you can actually call and talk to a live person and to support companies like that.

Ingredients for the Facial Cream

Instructions

  1. Add coconut oil to a glass or ceramic bowl. Mix with electric mixer, handheld (for optimal fluffiness) until smooth.
  2. Add frankincense essential oil to coconut oil. Continue to mix until mixture seems silky and completely smooth.
  3. Add to a glass jar with a lid. Store unrefrigerated with all your other beauty items in the bathroom.

*If you have sensitive skin, maybe start with one drop and if it does not irritate your skin add another drop an whip again.

** When I started using essential oils, it was mentioned to use glass instead of plastic with a mixture that contained essential oils because if you use plastic the essential oils can eat at the plastic and the chemicals from the plastic could leech into the mixture.

How I Store My Moisturizer

I reused a baby food jar, it is the perfect size for this recipe. See my picture below.

How Long Will the Moisturizer Last?

Depending on how long you have already had your coconut oil, which has a long shelf life of about 3 years, probably longer but that is what I generally see. It should last a while.

This face cream will not maintain the silkiness as when first whipped, but it will remain soft so it is easy to grab and apply.

You do not need very much at all, I use about a pea size to apply on my skin twice a day.

My Results using this Facial Cream?

I have always had skin issues. I still do but not as bad or consistent issues. Since I have been using this Frankincense face cream, my skin is clearer and less oily.

If you try this recipe, let me know what you think. I'm excited to see if your skin benefits from it as mine has.

Performing a Patch Test and a Few Safety Tips.

If you are new or not sure how a blend or essential oil may react on your skin, it is always recommended to do a patch test prior to use. To do this, mix 2 drops essential oil to about 1/2 teaspoon carrier oil then apply to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area over the next 1 to 2 hours for any noticeable reaction; this will usually occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience any irritation or discomfort either stop using or adjust the amount of essential oils you've used.

If you have not used a carrier oil before, you can also perform a patch test to the inner arm area.

Prior to using essential oils, always check the label for appropriate usage and do not apply essential oil to sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and mucous membranes. If you have a medical condition and/or you are taking medications, consult your physician prior to use.
